The class consisted of 14 Aquinas Scholars, mostly juniors and seniors, with a wide variety of majors: Course Design This course was created to integrate the disciplines of music and neuroscience to explore the fundamental relationship between music and the brain.
The specific goals of the course were to 1 learn the basic principles of the neural processing of sound, 2 gain a broader understanding of and appreciation for the art and science of music, and 3 integrate knowledge from both fields through active listening, reflective writing, and critical discussion.
It was open to any student in the Aquinas Scholars Honors Program, regardless of major or previous coursework.

Since it was designed as a seminar, the instructors most frequently acted as guides, information resources, and discussion participants rather than as lecturers. Each week, students were expected to bring questions and personal reflections to class, new articles and resources, and additional musical examples on a CD, iPod, or as an internet link.
We used Blackboard for the course; the assignments tool allowed us to evaluate assignments and provide feedback together, and the discussion board was used often by the students to share musical examples with each other.
To prepare for each class meeting, students read various assigned articles, listened to specific musical examples, and answered discussion questions as part of a course journal. Each week we focused on a particular set of questions, and prepared active learning strategies to stimulate discussion Table 1.

Students were required to be actively involved in the exploration, discussion, reflection, and expansion of course topics through in-class discussions and presentations and out-of-class responses to reading and listening.
The course culminated in student presentations of an interesting variety of final project topics see Table 2. Half the course grade was determined by student performance on reading and listening journals that were collected electronically each week see supplementary materials. We evaluated students on their ability to synthesize the phenomenological experience of specific music listening assignments with the scientific principles of auditory processing.
We also based our assessment on the depth of their understanding and analysis of the assigned material, and the unique reflections, real-life examples, and additional readings and musical recordings which they provided to support their answers. The other half of the course grade was based on student participation in class discussions and on the final presentation. Table 1 Examples of discussion topics and in-class activities.

The choice of minor subjects is important with respect to future career possibilities. An art historian focuses on these operations, studying and interpreting those phenomena of art which can be visually observed. Art History takes into consideration the historical premises of making and thinking about art.
Contemporary Culture The purpose of the Contemporary Culture is to represent and advance multi- and cross-disciplinary work in cultural studies, especially with a view to combine humanities and social science approaches. Sociocultural modernization has affected the status and characteristics of culture and its relations to the social and economic spheres.
As a consequence, identities and meanings in these terms have lost their former contours, and their constructions and changes pose new challenges for empirical research and cultural theory alike. Empirical research has been concerned with the production, distribution, reception and use of cultural products. Fandom studies have also been prominent in this area.
Other important strands have been narrative and autobiographical studies and digital culture studies. Creative Writing Creative writing is a line of specialization in the advanced level of studies in Literature. It combines creative writing, the pedagogy of writing and research.
The studies lead to the degree of Master of Arts with literature as the main subject. Time and memory For me, the most important parallels between music and physics happen on a more philosophical level. The late musicologist Jonathan Kramer started his book The Time of Music with the observation that small children play with blocks and toys to learn the fundamental concepts of space; by contrast, by singing and clapping, they play with music to learn about time.
We can sit in a concert hall or opera theatre for an hour and hear 90 different people make thousands of noises on bits of wood, metal and flesh, and yet walk away with the impression we have heard one thing - a symphony, or an opera.

Music joins up time, and allows us to hear time as patterned and organised. These patterns allow us to predict the future - we listen in anticipation: Music is also a powerful stimulus of memory - overhearing a piece of remembered music can instantly rekindle long-forgotten memories. It is much easier for most of us to memorise a song words and all than it is to memorise a poem.
Music is a tool for grasping the order and sense between what has happened in the past, what is happening now, and what will happen in the future. And to me, that sounds suspiciously like a definition of physics. Threat and survival Sadly, there is one last way in which music and physics are currently bedfellows. Worldwide, both disciplines are under threat at universities.
