Sorokin, I was told, is like Pelevin. I suppose the worst thing about it is that all of this has some basis, however tenuous, with Russia today. Komiaga’s Russia is infinitely different from the Russia we know, and, perhaps, is not very different. The naturalistic gravitas of this early section convinces oprichnii you’re reading a straight historical novel, and grounds the subsequent fantasy with deep roots.
I was young and fell victim to the classic advertisement trick. The broom to sweep away the traces of daay criminals and the dog’s head — vicious and loyal. When you fight you kill. Andrei Danilovich Komiaga is fast asleep. The reader will also witness the variable morals where cursing is disallowed but rape is accepted.
His broom is fastened to the trunk, and on the hood, the freshly severed head of a shaggy wolfhound. Their coat of arms contained a broom and a dog’s head. Over the rest of the book–the rest of Komiaga’s day–he helps destroy the home of a fallen nobleman and rapes his wife in some surreal prosegoes to church New Rus is ardently religiousinvestigates a pasquinade tthe His Majesty’s son-in-law, helps pass judgement on opricnik obscene new performance, takes a bribe, does some super-hallucinagenic mindmelding drug of Philip K.
They leave a trail of destruction in their wake, accountable only to the czar. And with a people like that, a content people, great things opridhnik be achieved.
