Commissioners listened to the publicThe Highlands County Commission meeting on July 10, regarding the fire assessment was remarkable. Those five commissioners were faced with a big problem. Without rehashing what you will likely read in this newspaper, I have to say I was very impressed with the job they did. The commissioners tossed out a flawed study.
One commissioner was there though he just had surgery. Not everyone will be percent happy with the results but they did great and listened to the public. You heard that right. They worked hard to meet all these conflicting interests and never lost sight of the fact they were working for the people of Highlands County.
I went in to the meeting a political cynic and they completely crushed that cynicism. I wish Washington politicians were as good as our Highlands County Commission.
They deserve a thank you for doing a great job under tough conditions. I have nothing to gripe about regarding our Commission or our county government. How great is that? We as a society must respect and be civil to all. That is how he won an election. Case in point, Rick Scott. No ads about what he will do in Washington but Nelson must go.
Be kind to one another. Not necessarily spooky Halloween sounds, mind you, but sounds in everyday life that could scare us. Even after I finished the column, friends were still weighing in on some noises that could be unsettling.
I decided these were too good not to share. So, here are some more scary sounds for you to ponder: A friend mentioned a deep dog growl from behind you. I have to agree this one would frighten me, especially if it were dark. And you are scared to turn around, lest you are greeted with fangs. A fellow writer came up with the sound of a bug zapper followed by a high-pitched scream.
That sounds like a scene from a horror movie to me. Another writer came up with one I have had the misfortune of hearing: One friend mentioned the sound of glass breaking as a scary sound. It usually means something will have to be fixed.
And the sound of a window breaking? Yeah, that can be frightening. I have heard this particular sound. I was definitely alarmed. Someone else mentioned a loud boom of thunder. Imagine sitting in your house during a storm and hearing thunder so loud it rattles the house. I would like to toss in the Amber Alert that goes off on my cell phone from time to time. Every time it goes off I jump. I guess they want to make sure they have your attention. She used to style hair, so that one was especially funny to me.
I hope she never said it. Another friend mentioned the grinding noise of an unidentified item in the garbage disposal. I have heard this. The source was one of our large fish tanks, which had sprung a leak and was dumping its contents into the dining room rug.
Add scary visual to scary sound. Recently I tripped and fell, banging up my knee. But readers Grace and Gary Plants came up with what I rate as the scariest sound of all.
On the other hand, the best sound in that situation? Well, at least they did this time. They devised new rates based on square footage of property categories, while still sticking with the ratio of percentages that the GSG study put in place.
It charges homeowners, business owners and institutions a lot less, but those rates will increase 7 percent per year to help meeting rising needs. In three years, the county will have the rates studied to see if they are still fair. At that time, the rates can be adjusted once more data is collected and analyzed. The rates for those should be different. The commissioners acknowledged that Tuesday night. They also acknowledged that the volunteers have saved many properties through the years.
The sad thing is, the funding that the county was spending to keep the departments and volunteers operational did not increase with the needs. No department of a government agency that is responsible for protecting lives and property should be allowed to go along with no more effort to provide better funding than what has been done in Highlands County.
Maybe not as big a step as some would have liked, but this step came with a unanimous vote to increase it 7 percent each year and in three years to restudy it. That should be a little easier to take.

It started a really long time ago. Everybody would come up to me and go, Youve gotta get the rights to this book. Youve gotta do this movie. Once they settled down and I knew I could begin, joy welled up as I looked into each of their faces. First, I asked a question, enjoying their varied answers. I introduced them to the child in the storybook explaining he came from a foreign country.
After they got used to saying it and hearing it, I began the story. But, if someone will gather them to read or tell a story, peace hovers over them. Settled, they quietly listen. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. The culture of his day did what the verse above says. They would pass on what they had heard and seen to their families and friends so that the excitement seemed to build with every telling.
For within each story resided truth that spoke to the heart and gave a longing to know more and be closer to Jesus. Then, I had the good news that we would do a craft together to reinforce the story.

Your stomach will not blow up like a balloon if you suck your thumb. However, according to a dentist-friend of mine, sucking your thumb can distort the shape of your mouth. It can cause the upper teeth to stick out and the lower teeth to stick in, causing a serious over-bite. Whether they are matters of good dental care or matters of our eternal salvation, it is important to remember that there are always consequences to our actions. The apostle Paul wrote a letter to the church in Rome warning them about the spiritual consequences of their actions.
Some Christians were being both judgmental and hypocritical toward others. Needing to repent of their sins, Paul wrote them the following: But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who will render to each person according to his deeds: For there is no partiality with God. Gernert said the reason is the museum aims to keep things as historic as possible and avoid modern furnishings. Additionally, they will be adding window blinds on upper windows to help shield the theater screen above the stage from glare.
Theatre Winter Haven plans to help the museum with straightening the drapery pull, as it has had some issues as well. In other museum news, Gernert reported there is a leak in the building, and the city, which owns the building, is aware of the leak and will be taking care of the issue at some point.
Gernert said one new things coming is they would like to extend the hours the museum is open, and serve a Saturday 9 a. That, he said, is how the museum and other museums grow, as people stop in and sometimes contribute to the rich history of the town by bringing in artifacts they donate to the cause.
The long term goal is to be open more hours so more people can access the building, but as such, he said, more volunteers are needed. Agape, of Catholic Charities, stopped giving agencies food and turning over the services to Feeding Tampa Bay, which serves a county region that includes Polk County. Agape has done this for 34 years in Polk County. Gary Tester, executive director of Catholic Charities in Polk, said funding has gotten too expensive for it.
Two are planned in Polk as Catholic Charities is looking for land. The meaning in this change may be negligible, though, as those who need the food may not have noticed the change.
VISTE Director Steve Bissonnette, who said it received 25 percent of its donations from Agape, noted what was offered instead, Feeding Tampa Bay, may not mean much currently, but it is something to keep an eye on. But, he said, Feeding Tampa Bay delivered twice a week on a trial.
He said this can be a behind the scenes interest, and agencies should decide whether or not to deal with what is coming. Gindlesperger said the agency helps with nutrition education and food security. She said so far it seems to be working, but working out the bugs may take some time. A Modern Marvel turned Urban Blight: This is in no small part the result of politicians deciding they know more about education than educators.
Charlotte sun herald ( 08-14-2018 )
A few years ago, legislators clamored for more testing in the name of accountability. Now they are calling for less testing so teachers can spend more time teaching.
Micromanagement of the educational system by politicians appears to be doing little to produce better educated students.
On the other hand, innovative approaches to education, large and small, regularly come from educators. On a less dramatic level, common sense approaches are being brought to bear on classroom disciplinary problems. A partnership between the Lake Wales charter school system and the Lake Wales Care Center is putting a positive spin on disciplinary suspensions.
Trump has gotten new trademarks in foreign countries since he has become president, he has made millions on his hotels, resorts and golf courses, and he and his children have not divested themselves of all ownership interests in the Trump business empire.
Many are less fortunate. My life has seen automobiles advance from manual transmissions that required double-clutching to cars that parallel park themselves; cars that drive themselves are being tested.
There are many other things that I have learned. Some have been on this list for a year or two; others were added this year.
Most of what I have learned, I learned from others. Family is your greatest blessing. Hug your friends often. When you want friends to pray for you, ask them. When friends need prayer, pray for them, and tell them you are praying for them. The older you get, the more offers of help you will get, whether it is carrying your groceries to the car or extending a hand when you stand up from a soft sofa. If you want to write a book, write it. If you want to get rich, buy a lottery ticket.
Your odds of getting rich are better with the lottery. There is a time to lead and a time to follow; do both gracefully. If you pursue a political career, keep your ego in check and your hands to yourself. Listen to people who disagree with you. You can learn a lot from them. Getting the job done is more important than getting credit for it.
Giving credit to others is more important than receiving credit yourself. Be careful when making enemies; one of them may be your boss some day. Make lots of friends. Like chocolate chips, you can never have too many. Life is too short to drink cheap Scotch. Be a mentor to a kid. Keep your cell phone charged, and enough gas in your car to respond to an emergency.
Cleanliness is next to Godliness; neatness is next to impossible. Wave at strangers when they drive past. If someone is wearing a name tag, call them by name. The school custodian will appreciate it more than the principal. You will spend more time with nurses than with doctors, and with hygienists than with dentists. Attend funerals of the people who have been special in your life.
Be careful what you put in writing. Unlike the spoken word, there is no way to deny that you said it. Be careful what you say when angry. Do not raise your voice to your children unless they are in danger.
Be nice to people who are rude to you. You may change them; if not, you will certainly confuse them. You will make mistakes in your life; most people will forgive you, and you should forgive yourself. You are bound to learn something, even if it is that you will never be a great artist, golfer or rock star.

This question has always been debatable because life requires that we choose between wisdom and foolishness. Foolishness often disguises itself to be attractive and satisfying. Emphasis was given to marriage, family, and individual responsibility. The lies of socialism are made to be attractive and appealing. At times of tragedy and death, what is most important often becomes crystal clear: She married a talented young pastor.
