I was astonished by this book because I don’t think I’ve ever actually read anything like it, where the heroine really does wait around passively until a man saves her. HistoricalRomance novel. A sweet, fun, charming read. Why would a hardened man ten years her senior fall faithfully, eternally, and deeply in love with her?

We were told – quite forcibly – that she was GOOD, and intelligent, and disciplined, and all that jazz, but what we saw Oh well, next time. The guts and courage Harriet mustered at times took me aback. She grew up in such a harsh atmosphere, but instead of making her afraid or bitter, is made her thirsty for information a I surprised myself and liked this book more than I thought I would. Books by Eva Ibbotson. A Company of Swans did exactly what I thought it would: I think, for me, this book was a case of the right book at the right time.

The Amazonian setting is so lushly described. He also reminded me a little of Guy from Magic Flutes, in that he can be rather sweet but also has a habit of being a bit of a douche at times too, and unfairly shouting at Harriet.

And one more gripe in this area: Once again Ibbotson shows how apt she is at expressing just how her character is feeling, in such a way that the reader sets the book down in her lap and sighs, “Yes. I loved this book. A comfort, escapist read can never be underestimated.
